His academic background was mainly acquired in the former Faculty of Philosophy and Education of the Universidad de Chile, under the direction of Professors Francisco Soler Grima –disciple of Julián Marías and José Ortega y Gasset–, Cástor Narvarte and Jaime Sologuren. At the Universidad de Chile he obtained the professional title of Professor of Philosophy, approved Unanimous distinction. His specialty is the philosophical thought of the twentieth century, in particular the philosophy of José Ortega y Gasset, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre and Julián Marías.

He was part of the Magister Artium in Philosophy, with a mention in Philosophy of the Science at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, where he was also responsible for the position in Philosophy of Technology. He was coordinator of the postgraduate course at the Department of Philosophy of the Universidad de Chile between 1984 and 1987, as well as the director of this academic department between 1989 – 1993 and 1995 and 2008. In this university, he works as Professor of Contemporary Philosophy (since 1976) and as a member of the programs: Master in Bioethics, Master in Philosophy and the PhDs in Philosophy and Psychology. He is a member of the Círculo Latinoamericano de Fenomenología (CLAFEN), Sociedad Iberoamericana de Estudios Heideggerianos (SIEH), Sociedad Chilena de Filosofía Jurídica y Social, the Internationale Vereinigung für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie (IVR) and Asociación Chilena de Filosofía (Achif). During his academic career he has been awarded the “Medalla por 40 años de servicio en la Universidad de Chile” (2007), “Diploma en reconocimiento a su calidad de Profesor Titular de la Universidad de Chile” (2000), “Premio Municipal de Literatura en el género ‘Ensayo’” awarded by the Municipality of Santiago (1984) and “Beca al Mejor Egresado de la Facultad de Filosofía y Educación de la Universidad de Chile” (1970). He is currently full Professor in the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at Universidad de Chile.
