After further studies under the direction of Bernhard Waldenfels and Klaus Held in Germany, he has obtained a PhD at the Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia). Dr. Komel is mainly dedicated to do research about philosophical hermeneutics, phenomenology, philosophy of culture, philosophy of art, translation and philosophical terminology, identity and European cultural differences and interculturality.

He received the Zois Award by the Republic of Slovenia for his outstanding scientific achievements in 2003. He is also an initiator (1990) and president (1996) of the Phenomenological Society of Ljubljana and member of numerous philosophical societies, editorial councils and scientific journals of philosophy and culture such as: Phainomena, Nova Revija, Ampak, Prolegomena, Orbis Phaenomenologicus, Topos, Teoria, Analecta Hermeneutica, Magazzino di filosofía y Divinatio. He is a founding member of the Central and Eastern Europe Conference on Phenomenology and the Organization of Phenomenological Organizations. He is professor at the Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia) in the Faculty of Letters and also the head of the Department of Philosophy since 2002. Since 2005 he directs research activities at the Inštitut Nove Revije, Zavod za Humanistiko.

Scientist invited by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (Marie Curie COFUND Fellow) 2010-2012 at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Philosophy from the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany). He then obtained a Doctoral fellowship to study at the Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst (KAAD) and by the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch-Dienst DAAD (declined). He was a member of the advisory group for the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) in the project “La enseñanza de la Filosofía en Iberoamérica”. Focused on the study of Heidegger, Nietzsche and Horkheimer.

He translated the volume 38 of Heidegger’s Gesamtausgabe from German in to Spanish (Lógica como pregunta por la esencia del lenguaje). He is a member of the Heidegger-Gesellschaft, of the Sociedad Iberoamericana de Estudios Heideggerianos SIEH (President from 2009-2011) and also of the Heidegger-Institut. He conducted his postdoctoral research with the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (Germany): “Instrumentalisierung des Denkens: Martin Heidegger und Max Horkheimer im Vergleich”. He currently works as a professor for the Philosophy Department at the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia (UPTC) and cofunder and codirector of International Center of studies on Contemporary Nihilism (CeNic).

He is Director of the Martin-Heidegger-Archiv (Meßkirch) and of the “Archivo Heidegger” by the Universidad de Sevilla (Spain). He is co-editor of the Martin-Heidegger-Gesamtausgabe, founder and co-editor of the Heidegger-Jahrbuch, as well as founder and co-editor of the Martin-Heidegger-Briefausgabe and of the Anuario-Heidegger. Since 1997 he has been working on a three-volume biography of Martin Heidegger. In France he is currently the director of the Center of Philosophy and Art “Philo-Art”.

Laurea in Philosophy at the Università di Pisa with a thesis directed by Vittorio Sainati. He has completed his studies to perfect the philosophy at the Università di Genoa under the direction of Alberto Caracciolo. In 1982 he obtained a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to study at the Universität Mannheim (Germany) and to participate in the courses of Hans-Georg Gadamer at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. His research has been focused on phenomenology and hermeneutics (especially in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger), he has translated some volumes of the work of this philosopher and has written several books about him, as well as on the philosophy of religion he has undertaken research in the fundamentals of discipline, especially from contemporany works with Hebrew and Christian influences, and on the ethics of communication (he has specifically addressed the use of the new communication technologies).

He leads the Ph.D. programme in Philosophy at Università di Pisa and Firenze, as well as the “Centro Interdisciplinare di ricerche e di servizi sulla Comunicazione” of the Università di Pisa. He is the Director of “Teoria. Rivista di Filosofia”, and the founder and director of the institute “Religioni e Teologia” (Re.Te.) of the Theological Faculty of Lugano (Switzerland) in which he conducts research into interreligious dialogue. He leads the research project “L’aporia del nulla e il nichilismo contemporaneo”, linked to the university course of moral philosophy that he started this year. He is professor of moral philosophy at the Università di Pisa and cofunder and codirector of the International Center of studies on Contemporary Nihilism” (CeNic).
