After further studies under the direction of Bernhard Waldenfels and Klaus Held in Germany, he has obtained a PhD at the Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia). Dr. Komel is mainly dedicated to do research about philosophical hermeneutics, phenomenology, philosophy of culture, philosophy of art, translation and philosophical terminology, identity and European cultural differences and interculturality.

He received the Zois Award by the Republic of Slovenia for his outstanding scientific achievements in 2003. He is also an initiator (1990) and president (1996) of the Phenomenological Society of Ljubljana and member of numerous philosophical societies, editorial councils and scientific journals of philosophy and culture such as: Phainomena, Nova Revija, Ampak, Prolegomena, Orbis Phaenomenologicus, Topos, Teoria, Analecta Hermeneutica, Magazzino di filosofía y Divinatio. He is a founding member of the Central and Eastern Europe Conference on Phenomenology and the Organization of Phenomenological Organizations. He is professor at the Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia) in the Faculty of Letters and also the head of the Department of Philosophy since 2002. Since 2005 he directs research activities at the Inštitut Nove Revije, Zavod za Humanistiko.
